Just when you think you would never get arrested for a DUI, it happens.
It certainly happens to the best of us.
You may not know what to do next.
If this is your first offense there may be a chance your punishment isn’t severe.
Regardless of this, you still have to face the consequences of what you’ve done.
You will most likely face jail time.
Thankfully if no one was hurt then it could be a very small amount of time.
The right lawyer will guide you effectively through this process.
While your lawyer is there to help you, he is also there to remind you of what’s to come.
A driver is considered legally impaired with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher.
When my first DUI occurred, I had just scratched the surface of that level.
Luckily no one was hurt and neither was I, I was just experiencing massive fear.
The police had found me, after determining how impaired I was they took me to jail.
My license was revoked and my car was totaled beyond repair.
I could do nothing but sob, I felt as if I was the biggest failure.
I spent the night in jail and luckily had the help of my parents to bail me out.
If this happens to you, you will have the option to seek out a lawyer.
However, you also may have to have the courts help you find one.
Your sentence is next to come.
Depending on the severity of your situation will determine your sentence.
You will be expected to pay court fees, probation fees, and legal fees etc.
Your time on probation is important.
Your probation officer will have great power over you.
It is important to remember to listen to everything they say.
You may get one year, or several years.
You will have to attend driving classes.
You will have to work to obtain your license back.
You will also have to strategize ways to accomplish your community service hours.
In some cases, you may still have a job despite your situation.
Balancing a full-time job while trying to accomplish volunteer work is no easy task.
Try to find local nonprofits in your area.
These can range from anything from a homeless shelter to a food bank.
Create a schedule for yourself so you know when to balance your job and your hours.
If there is a problem, be honest with your probation officer.
Now, your time adjusting back into society does not have to be difficult.
Be patient with yourself as you work out your goals for redemption.
This was my first incident and it was enough to help me quit drinking.
I feel healthier and more responsible.
Drinking was something in my life I used to mask my depression.
It was only until I experienced this traumatic event that made me quit for good.
Growing up you will be faced with pressure to try drinking for the first time.
Do not be ashamed to want change for yourself even if you drink.
If you’re like me and you want to quit, then stay sober for your health and well-being.
If you wish to change, It’s possible as long as you’re accountable.
Be safe, help those around you say safe too.
Don’t drink and drive.
