August Wilson’s ‘Jitney’

September 9, 2022 @ 7:30 pm

$26.95

Weaving together the workdays of a company of African American drivers in an environment where someone is always half in or out the door”.

Directed by: N.L. Starr

About this event

Jitney is set in 1977, with the action taking place in a worn-down cab station called Becker’s Car Service. According to the playwright, licensed taxi companies refused to transport customers in the Hill District, so the independently owned, unlicensed cabs called jitneys served a crucial role.

The various drivers and a few frequent customers come in and out of the station, sharing the circumstances of their lives as they unfold over the course of a few weeks. The overriding theme that pervades the connecting storylines is the struggle for success in the face of overwhelming odds.
